General Information

Sewer Pipe Damage Prevention – Sewer overflows and backups can cause health hazards, damage home interiors and threaten the environment. An increasingly common cause is sewer pipes blocked by grease. Grease gets into the sewer from household drains as well as from poorly maintained grease traps in restaurants and other businesses.

Grease is found in such things as meat fats, lard, cooking oil, shortening, food scraps and more. Too often grease is washed into the plumbing system, usually from the kitchen sink. Grease sticks to the insides of the sewer pipes (both on your property and in the streets). Over time, the grease can build up and block the entire pipe.

Home garbage disposals do not keep grease out of the plumbing system. These units only shred material into smaller pieces and do not prevent grease from going down the drain. Commercial additives, including detergents that claim to dissolve grease may pass grease down the line and cause problems in other areas.

The results can be:

  • Raw sewage overflowing in your home or your neighbor’s home.
  • Expensive and unpleasant cleanup that often must be paid for by you, the homeowner.
  • Raw sewage overflowing into parks, yards and streets.
  • Potential contact with disease causing organisms
  • An increase in operation and maintenance costs for local sewer departments which causes higher sewer bills for customers.

The easiest way to solve the grease problem and help prevent overflows of raw sewage is to keep this material out of the sewer system. Never pour grease down sink drains or into toilets. Scrape grease and food scraps into a can or trash and do not put grease down garbage disposals.

Sewer Billing

Limerick Township Sewer Department bills for sewer on a quarterly basis. The bill is made up of two components; a base charge to cover capital costs including a base allocation of capacity and a consumption charge which depends on additional water usage to cover operational costs. The consumption component of the bill will be generated from usage data received from Pennsylvania American Water Company or from the private meter the Sewer Department installed on your well.

The rates are as follows: (NEW RATES FOR 2010)

  • Base Usage Charge - $81.06
  • Consumption Usage Charge
    • Cubic Foot Readings: 1,000 cubic feet included in base charge
    • $4.47 per 100 cubic feet over 1,000 c.f.
  • Gallon Readings: 7,481 gallon included in base charge
    $5.97 per 1,000 gallons over 7,481 gallons

If you have any questions regarding your sewer bill, please contact the Sewer Department and the staff will be able to assist you.

Sewer Deduct Meter

For customers who use a lot of water to water grass, fill a pool, etc. You may choose to contract privately to install a deduct meter on the water pipe going to the outside hose bib at your expense. The Sewer Department has both cubic feet and gallon meters available to you, at our cost of $155.00 including a touch pad so that a read may be obtained without needing entry into your home. Readings obtained on a quarterly basis allows that water usage to be subtracted from the total usage before the bill is computed.

Please contact the Sewer Department to purchase your meter. Neither Limerick Township nor Pennsylvania American Water Company installs the deduct meter on the water pipe going to the outside hose bib.

Once installed, call the Sewer Department 24 hours in advance to schedule a meter inspection and at that time, you will be placed on a mailing list. We ask that you read the meter quarterly and return a card that we provide with your outside water usage. Once a year, we will confirm the usage with an on-site read.
